An assertion made by French philosopher René Descartes in the seventeenth century. Descartes’ search for an unquestionable assertion came to a conclusion with the phrase “I think; therefore I am.” He discovered that because he was the one who was doubting himself in the first place, he could not doubt that he was real. “Cogito, ergo sum” is the term used in Latin, the language Descartes wrote in.
